Speeding Tickets in Iceland: A Guide for Tourists

Iceland's roads are beautiful, but speed limits are strictly enforced by both police patrols and speed cameras. Here is what you need to know.

Speed limits in Iceland

  • Towns and cities: usually 50 km/h (31 mph), and often 30 km/h in residential areas.
  • Gravel roads: 80 km/h (50 mph) unless otherwise posted.
  • Paved roads outside towns: 90 km/h (56 mph) unless otherwise posted.

Always adjust your speed to road and weather conditions – the limit is a maximum, not a target.

Speeding fines

Speeding fines in Iceland are high and increase with how far over the limit you drive. Serious violations can lead to very large fines and a driving ban.

  • Stopped by the police: The police can issue a fine on the spot, which can be paid immediately by card.
  • Speed camera: The police contact the vehicle owner (SIXT) to identify the driver. SIXT is required to provide your details to the police, and the police will then contact you directly about the fine.

SIXT handling fee

When SIXT has to provide driver information to the police because of a speeding offense, a handling fee of 2,590 ISK is charged to the credit card used for the rental. This fee comes in addition to the fine itself, which you pay to the police.

Tips to avoid speeding tickets

  • Watch for speed limit signs, especially when entering towns or when the road changes from paved to gravel.
  • Use cruise control if your vehicle has it.
  • Remember that speed cameras are common on Icelandic roads.
