Deposit
When renting a car from SIXT in Iceland, a deposit is required to cover potential additional charges and ensure the vehicle's safe return. Here’s a detailed explanation of how the deposit process works:
1. Deposit Amount
- Total Rental Cost Plus Deposit: The deposit amount includes the total rental cost plus an additional amount, depending on the car category:
- Economy and Standard Vehicles: Total rental cost + €300
- SUV's, Premium and Luxury Vehicles: Total rental cost + €500
2. Payment Method
- Credit Card Requirement: SIXT generally requires a credit card for the deposit. The credit card must be in the name of the primary driver.
- Hold on Funds: The total amount (rental cost + deposit) is held on the credit card at the start of the rental period. This hold ensures that funds are available but are not yet deducted from the account.
3. Release of Deposit
- At the End of the Rental: When the vehicle is returned in the same condition as it was rented and all rental terms are met, the rental cost is charged, and the additional deposit amount (€300 or €500) is released.
- Time Frame: The release time can vary depending on the bank or credit card issuer. It typically takes a few business days but can sometimes take up to a couple of weeks.
Example Scenario
If you rent a standard car from Sixt at Keflavik International Airport with a total rental cost of €200 and a required deposit of €300:
- At Pickup: A hold of €500 (€200 rental cost + €300 deposit) is placed on your credit card.
- During Rental: This amount remains on hold during the rental period.
- At Return: If the car is returned in good condition and with a full tank of fuel (if required by your rental agreement), the rental cost of €200 is charged, and the €300 deposit hold is released.
- Post-Rental: The hold release might take a few days to reflect in your account, depending on your credit card provider.
Tips for our customers
- Check Credit Limit: Ensure your credit card has sufficient available credit to cover the total hold amount (rental cost + deposit).
- Understand Terms: Read the rental agreement carefully to understand all terms related to the deposit, including any potential charges.
- Inspect Vehicle: Thoroughly inspect the vehicle at pickup and return to avoid disputes over damages.
