Tunnel Toll – Vaðlaheiðargöng

Exploring North Iceland? The Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel is the main route east of Akureyri, and it is a toll road.

Tunnel overview

  • Location: Route 1 in North Iceland, between Akureyri and Mývatn / Húsavík.
  • Length: 7.5 km (4.7 miles).
  • Why use it: It saves about 16 km compared with the Víkurskarð mountain pass, which can be dangerous in winter.

Price and payment

  • Price: 2,216 ISK per trip for passenger cars (under 3,500 kg).
  • How to pay: Online at tunnel.is (the English site of veggjald.is).
  • When to pay: Within 24 hours before or 24 hours after driving through the tunnel. Each trip must be paid separately.

What happens if you don't pay?

There are no toll booths: cameras register the license plate, and unpaid tolls are billed to the vehicle owner, which is SIXT. We will then pass the toll on to you together with a fine handling fee. See Parking, tolls and fines in Iceland for details.
