Unlimited or Limited Mileage?

When you book a car with SIXT, you choose between unlimited and limited mileage. Here's the difference – and why we usually recommend unlimited in Iceland.

Unlimited mileage

Drive as far as you like during your rental with no extra charge for the distance. Ideal for road trips and anyone driving the Ring Road.

Limited mileage

You can drive up to a set number of kilometers during the rental. Every kilometer over the limit is charged extra. Limited mileage can lower the rental price if you're only driving short distances or staying in one area – but going over the limit can become expensive.

Our recommendation

Distances in Iceland add up quickly – for example, it's about 430 km from our office at Keflavík Airport to Akureyri in North Iceland. That's why we always recommend unlimited mileage for touring Iceland.

Please note: The mileage option can't be changed after pick-up, once the signed rental agreement has been issued.

Mileage and the road tax

Unlimited mileage covers SIXT's distance charges only. The Icelandic government's road tax is charged per kilometer on all rentals, regardless of your mileage option – see Road tax information.

Tips

  • Plan your route and estimate how far you'll drive before choosing.
  • Check your rental agreement for the included kilometers and the price per extra kilometer.
