Which Car Do I Need?

The right car depends on when you travel, where you're going and how many of you there are. Here's a quick guide.

Do I need a 4x4?

Your trip Our advice
Summer, Reykjavík, Golden Circle, South Coast or Ring Road A 2WD car is usually enough – the main roads are paved.
Winter (roughly October to April) A 4x4 gives extra grip and safety on snow and ice, especially outside the capital area.
Highlands and F-roads (summer only) An approved 4x4 is required. Electric and hybrid cars are never allowed. See F-roads in Iceland.
Long gravel roads, Westfjords, East Iceland A 4x4 or a car with higher ground clearance is more comfortable.

Space for people and luggage

  • Count your suitcases, not just your passengers – a small car fits four people, but rarely four people and four large suitcases.
  • For families or groups with a lot of luggage, choose an SUV, an estate car or a larger car.
  • Traveling with children? Child seats are available for a fee – book them in advance. See Picking up your car.

Electric, hybrid or fuel?

  • Electric cars are great for Reykjavík, the Golden Circle and the South Coast, where there are plenty of chargers. On longer routes, plan your charging stops in advance.
  • Cold weather reduces range – in winter an electric car may go noticeably shorter on a full battery than in summer.
  • Electric and hybrid cars are not allowed on F-roads.

Manual or automatic?

We have both manual and automatic cars, depending on the car category. If you only drive automatic, check this when you book.

Age and license

Some car categories have a higher minimum age and require that you've held your license longer. See Picking up your car.
