How to Report Damage or an Accident
If your rental car has been damaged – in an accident, by a stone, the wind, an animal or anything else – please report it to us as soon as possible, even if you have full protection. A complete report helps us handle your case quickly and correctly.
The online form guides you through everything we need – including photos and the details of any other party. You get a reference number right away.
At the scene
- If anyone is injured or in danger, call 112 immediately.
- Collision with another vehicle in the capital area? Call Árekstur.is at +354 578 9090. They come to the scene and help both parties fill in the accident report.
- Another vehicle, but no one comes to the scene? Fill in an accident report together with the other driver, and both sign it. Take a photo of it.
- Take photos of the damage, both vehicles, their license plates and the surroundings.

How to report the damage to SIXT
The easiest way is the online damage report form. If you can't use it, send an email to cs@sixt.is with the subject "Damage report – [your rental agreement number]" and include the information below.
About the rental
- Rental agreement number and the car's license plate
- Name, email and phone number of the renter and the driver at the time
About the incident
- Date, time and place (a map pin or a description of the location)
- What happened, in your own words
- Type of damage – for example collision, single-vehicle accident, animal, stone chip, wind, sand or ash, or damage while parked
- Was anyone injured?
- Did the police or Árekstur.is come to the scene? If so, include the report number.
If another vehicle was involved
- The other driver's name, phone number, license plate and insurance company
- Names and phone numbers of any witnesses
- A photo of the signed accident report

- Close-ups and wide shots of the damage on our car
- The other vehicle and its license plate, if any
- The scene – the road, signs and conditions
Why this matters – even with full protection
Your protection covers damage according to your rental agreement, but some damage is never covered – for example river crossings, off-road driving and F-roads with a car that isn't approved. A clear report helps us confirm what happened and settle the case faster. If another driver caused the accident, the report also helps us claim against their insurance.
